I walked outside the other morning and there it was: I could SMELL Mardi Gras in the air — that moment when the grass blades start to heat up a little, foreshadowing spring, and you ingest the sweetest scent of Carnival and king cake and everything is good in the world. I started to get excited last Saturday when I went out shopping for Mardi Gras costumes. We stopped in Fun Rockin to explore the idea of a unicorn head and I fell in love with a fabulous white, rainbow-banged wig and my wheels started turning. Rainbow Bright? A mermaid? A raver? Who knows! The fun thing about Mardi Gras costumes is that the sky’s the limit; you can focus on a color or a theme, or go full out into character.
Costume Shopping in New Orleans for Mardi Gras
Buying a Costume
In New Orleans, it’s easy to imagine, source and create a costume for Mardi Gras. First, you just have to figure out what you want to be. For example, if you’re going with something that’s easily purchased via a New Orleans costume shop, I suggest Uptown Costume, New Orleans Party & Costume, Fun Rock’n & Pop City, Miss Claudia’s and Buffalo Exchange. Uptown Costume has a fantastic selection of pre-made, out of the box costumes.
Making a Costume
If you’re putting something together, you’ll probably need to make a trip to a fabric store. If your budget has no boundaries, Promenade Fabrics on St. Charles is definitely the place to go for a luxury experience, getting lost in vintage Chanel, Carolina Herrera, and all the established fashion houses. If you’re looking for staples like tulle for a tutu or filler, I’d suggest going to Hancock Fabrics on the Westbank or JoAnn fabrics on Veterans Blvd. Time is of the essence, as their silver and gold metallic fabrics are a hot commodity.
For accessories like body glitter, eyelashes, wigs and more, Fifi Mahoney’s is your place. It’s the only place really. It’s so fabulous there and all the sales people are extremely educated in their craft. What’s great about Fifi’s is that you’re bound to go in there with one idea and walk out with several more on how to take your costume to the next level!
Go forth, and be Mardi Gras magnificent!
