Some may say that cupcakes are played out, but if the number of cupcake shops, bakers and cupcakes around New Orleans make any statement, it’s that the cupcake is alive and well. I’ll cop to not being a fan of GIANT, over-sized cupcakes mounded with gobs and gobs of frosting, but, I do like a properly proportioned treat and a lot of New Orleans flavor.
Pralines by Jean, a sweets shop on St. Charles Avenue, makes incredible creamy pralines and, yes, just-the-right-size cupcakes in everyday flavors as well as seasonal inspirations like fresh strawberry in April. Chef-owner Jean Stickney is serious about New Orleans and the edibles that pour from her shop. As a New Orleanian, a lover of Brocato’s, Italian history and heritage, this particular cupcake says it all. The Neapolitan from Pralines By Jean is made with tchoucolate, vanilla, and strawberry cake with tchoucolate, vanilla, and strawberry buttercream frosting; chocolate syrup and a slice of fresh strawberry. It is as delicious as it sounds. Revisit the magic of a well composed cupcake with the Neapolitan at Jean’s.
