New Orleanians have a rather strange habit. While eating a meal, they’ll talk about where they’ve recently been for great meals and probably end up planning their next meal. I figured we could do the same for festivals. While you’re in the middle of Jazz Fest, we’re going to talk about your next festival plans. You’ll head back to the same general area, which is the first destination in our NOLA By Bike series, only this time entry is free.
This year’s Mid-City Bayou Boogaloo takes place Friday, May 17 through Sunday May 19, rain or shine. This free festival along the banks of Bayou St. John features more than 30 bands across multiple stages. Bayou Boogaloo rounds out the free fun with art, food and a ton of other activities.
Sure, this isn’t quite Jazz Fest food area 1 or 2, but the Bayou Boogaloo food lineup is pretty killer. I’d probably hit the to-kill-for Boucherie’s 12 hour roast beef po-boy, follow it up with the unbelievable empanadas from the relatively new Canal Street Bistro (which was previously Eco Café) and close out with ice cream or sorbet from Quintin’s. Of course, that’s just for starters. And you better believe we’d be planning our next bite to eat.
While the Bayou Boogaloo music lineup looks great, I’m in a brass band mood so I’ll be heading out to get my brass fix. Rebirth for Friday night, Brass-a-holics on Saturday and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band on Sunday. In between bands (and food breaks), we’re definitely looking forward to checking out the wares of the local artists and getting in on the big activities, like the rubber ducky derby. That’s a heck of a weekend. And to think, all this helps out charitable purposes and sustainability initiatives. Hope to see you out there!
