Raising Laughs Through Comedy Awareness in New Orleans

When the gods get together to lounge around, eat grapes and peruse their official annals of Most Fun Places To Go Visit, New Orleans always rises to the top of the heap. After all, New Orleans has drawn travelers from across the world for hundreds of years seeking its outlandish fun and ability to laissez les bon temps roule. Now thanks to The New Movement, New Orleans is becoming a place not only to seek things that offer outstanding fun, but also things that are outstandingly funny. Their newest comedic effort? Raising Nola Comedy Awareness: 19 Shows in 19 Days in 19 Venues.

If you’ve ever had a really good belly chuckle or emitted an embarrassing public snort at a comedy show, dollars to donuts New Movement had something to do with its presence in New Orleans. New Movement founders Chris Trew and Tami Nelson met during improv classes in New Orleans in 2004.  They talked, they dreamed, and they shared their long-held hopes to run their own theater and conservatory. Badda bing, badda boom, the New Movement opened in Austin, TX in February 2009 as a full time comedy conservatory. Less than two years later, with the support of comedy troupe Stupid Time Machine, New Movement NOLA had arrived.

Raising Nola Comedy Awareness: 19 Shows in 19 Days in 19 Venues features not only the variety of talent in and around New Orleans, but also the potential for so many spaces in our city to become venues for comedy shows. The 19 days of comedy started Jan. 10, leading up to the official Fun Razor show on Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. at The New Movement’s new space at 1919 Burgundy St. in the Marigny neighborhood.
