Willie Mae’s Scotch House: A New Orleans Legend

A little fried chicken joint in the Treme is causing quite the nation-wide stir. First, Bon Appetit named Willie Mae’s Scotch House one of the six best places for fried chicken in the country in 2010. Then, food traveler, restauranteur and overall rockstar Anthony Bourdain stopped by in his recent No Reservations: “Cajun Country” episode, causing another resurgence in publicity. It’s always been a star to locals, and now the rest of the country knows why. Owner Willie Mae first opened the aptly named Scotch House as a bar in 1956 and then somehow, she started serving her southern soul food, and thank heavens she did because it is divine. Of course the chicken is outstanding, but the sides like the exquisite red beans and rice are right on par. To quote the ever-eloquent Tony, they’re “the very definition of a simple, good thing elevated to symphonic heights.” Take a visit to the Treme and taste for yourself. The proof is in the chicken!
