New Orleans Bargain Center sells Mexican Folk Art

A beautiful treasure from your New Orleans visit.

When you think of souvenirs to bring back home from your New Orleans vacation the usual suspects involve images of the French Quarter, pralines and other delicious treats, or maybe a witty t-shirt. However, if you are looking for a more unexpected reminder of your New Orleans adventures, a piece of Mexican Folk Art from the Bargain Center would be a lot more interesting than that alligator mug you were eyeing up.

The Bargain Center is located in the heart of the Bywater, a neighborhood just off the usual beaten path. In addition to great hidden restaurants and coffee shops you’ll find interesting places such as this. Having been in business for ten years, The Bargain Center is an antique and junk shop with a sizable collection of Mexican folk art for sale.

The buyers go to Mexico 2-3 times a year for a month at a time, looking for the best pieces they can find. Items range from inexpensive, colorful masks for $8-$60 to more elaborate pieces going upwards to $900. There is also beautiful handmade jewelry and embroidered clothing. There are also some great figurines from the world famous Aguilar sisters from Oaxaca. The pieces are designed in clay and each sister has a very distinct style that she works within.

Of course, make sure you look around the rest of the Bargain Center while you are there. There’s a little bit of everything and you might find a cool vintage version of that alligator mug that you were looking for.  Also note that while the Mexican art can be purchased with a credit or debit card the thrift items are cash only.
