Natalie Mae is a skilled songwriter and a passionate performer who’s emerging as a rising star in the bluegrass music scene. With folk musician parents, she grew up in the folk and bluegrass world attending her parents’ shows throughout her childhood. She began writing her own songs in the 7th grade, and fine-tuned her skills in a songwriting class at Loyola University in New Orleans. She now leads her own bluegrass band, Natalie Mae and Her Unturned Tricks, and is also a member of The Blue Party. She is currently working on a new album, which she funded via a Kickstarter campaign.

Take a sneak peek at the audio interview:

Did it take you seeing [music] live to really get into it?
Once I could drive, I was at [a local Michigan venue] almost every night of the week volunteering at shows and watching them, and just being completely blown away at just about every show. When I see something live and get affected like that, that just makes me so want to experience that for myself, and make others experience that. It just really inspires me wanting to put on a really amazing show, and that comes first with just being an amazing musician.

You’ve really been enjoying playing the scene down here [in New Orleans], are you enjoying playing with a full band now?
Yea, I played solo for a good year, I guess. Until I got confident in meeting people, and other people taking interest in what I was doing and trusting other people to be on the same musical page as me. And so far, I’ve got a great group of guys that really just help accentuate everything I want to put out in a live show and they just make it rock!
