Whether one comes to New Orleans for the first time with a list of shops found online, or with recommendations from friends who have been here before, visitors to New Orleans know what the locals know: we can shop ’til we drop in the Big Easy. One place that has been a favorite shopping stop since the 1970s is Tommy’s Flowers (Vieux Carre Garden and Home), 533 Rue St. Louis. Tommy’s was started by Tommy Champagne in the 1970s, who passed away some years ago, and it is now owned and operated by long time employees George and Nancy Segers, and George Slaton.
Tommy’s has the most beautiful flowers. You can just buy a bunch or have them expertly arranged by Nancy Segers and George Slaton. Tommy’s is also a great place to buy a special gift or a memento of New Orleans. George Segers stocks the shop with beautiful items at the most amazing affordable prices. Segers is a renowned interior designer, and it is reflected in how he chooses and displays the wares at Tommy’s.
There is always something pretty to pack in your suitcase, from reproduction oyster plates, to little Gris-Gris trinkets you will only find in New Orleans. And of course, if you must have that Aubusson rug or inlaid Italian chair, Tommy’s will ship. If you are coming to New Orleans to get married, or celebrate any occasion from a romantic dinner for two or a party for 100, Tommy’s can arrange the flowers for you like no one else.
Tommy’s has resided in many New Orleans locales since their doors opened in the 70′s. It’s been everywhere from to a garage space on Rampart Street, to an elegant Royal Street spot and was even located in an old townhouse on Chartres Street that was the childhood home of musician Danny Barker. The Royal Street shop was one of the first stores to re-open after Katrina, and was packed to the rafters with beautiful home accessories, as well as their usual incredible selection of cut flowers and plants. Tommy’s is now located in a new beautiful building on Rue St. Louis right across from Emeril’s restaurant NOLA.
Until next time I remain the Visual Vamp, and Magazine Street is my beat, but sometimes the vamp has just got to go hang out in the Quarter!
