Visit French Antique shop Bush Antiques on Magazine Street in New Orleans

Allain Bush specializes in retrofitting beautiful French antique beds (and yes they will ship anywhere!)

Allain Bush has operated Bush Antiques at 2109 Magazine Street since 1979. Allain goes on annual buying trips to Europe, and always brings back beautiful and unique items. Like many stores in New Orleans, Bush Antiques has set up shop in an old house. There are twelve fabulously styled rooms with French and continental furniture, religious art, textiles, lighting and garden pieces. “I specialize in things that I like or love,” Allain Bush said of the curious and glorious mix of antiques she sells, including her best-selling antique beds.

For those in the market for antique beds, Bush Antiques is well worth a try. According to Allain, it is difficult to find or sell antique beds because most antique beds were made in twin, single or full size, and today’s consumer is looking for queen or king size. “We’re always trying to extend beds and headboards,” said Bush.

Flambeau sconces are a perfect souvenir from New Orleans

Bush Antiques feels like an elegant place in France that sells brocante (that spectacular French cross between an antiques fair and a flea market): antiques, near-antiques, old stuff, and anything else that can be given a patina of respectability. When you visit this shop, you will find a unique variety of incredible pieces. On my last visit I spotted an absolutely gorgeous pair of gold and white Old Paris candlesticks, a pair of sconces in the shape of flambeau (the flaming torch carried in Carnival parades here in New Orleans), an amazing linen bed coverlet and an ornate tunic from the 1920s..

Bush Antiques is loved by locals and visitors alike. And of course they ship anything anywhere — this is New Orleans darling, the port of beauty to the world.

Bush Antiques is number 3 on my list of The Top Five French Antique Shops On Magazine Street. So far: #5 Karina Gentinetta, #4 Petricia Thompson’s “Antiquities d’Europe, #3 Bush Antiques. Who will be #2 and #1?
