This is the second in a series the Visual Vamp is doing about the five best shops that sell French antiques on Magazine Street. New Orleans is a city known for its fabulous shopping and for the incredible stock of French antiques it has for both locals and visitors to buy.
Coming in at #4 of the best French antiques shops on Magazine Street, is Petricia Thompson’s “Antiquities d’Europe.”
A 40 foot long container just came in from France, jam packing this lovely shop with some beautiful and exciting furniture and objects. While I was there, a nationally known interior designer was shopping for a new project in New York City.
I spied among all the new goodies, some papier mache cherub heads made by an award winning contemporary French artist, Elise Valdorcia, that are exquisite! Valdorcia uses an ancient technique that makes these signed, one of-of-kind, pieces have a very special patina and charm.
Petricia Thompson is the most helpful and sweet person you would ever want to meet, and whether you are a seasoned collector, or someone just getting started with collecting, she will guide you with care and enthusiasm.
I love the custom pillows she does! And so many of her small items are eminently shippable, though if she can handle huge containers from France, she can certainly ship furniture to you anywhere in the world. So if you want to bring a little Paris home via New Orleans, do not hesitate to ask Petricia for help in selecting something for shipping.
Antiquities d’ Europe follows the norm we are so lucky to have here in New Orleans, that of using an old house as a shop, so that you can wind your way from room to room, discovering incredible treasures in every nook and cranny. Shop owners in New Orleans are famous for the way they set up there shops, and this alone is worth an afternoon of browsing for inspiration.
So stop by Petricia Thompson’s wonderful emporium of French design from the elegance of an 18th century Regence commode to the rustic charm of a good selection of farm tables from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Stay tuned for the next three of the five best shops to buy French antiques on Magazine Street. Until then I remain the Visual Vamp, and Magazine Street is my beat.
