Bikes in New Orleans bring you Mardi Gras cheer and falafel from Mona's Cafe! (Photo Credit: gather.com)
It’s Friday evening. Or it’s Saturday around lunch time. Or Sunday afternoon. You. Are. Hungry. You are also in your pajamas, whatever form that might take. This is a judgment free zone. I don’t care what you sleep in or how you’re dressed when you have no plans of leaving your house. Maybe it’s raining, or it’s 90 degrees and 95 percent humidity outside.
You need food. And you aren’t interested in leaving the confines of your home or your hotel.
Delivering New Orleans Food
But it’s New Orleans, the city of live music and dine-in restaurants and street people. How do you bring that to your home with the littlest effort possible? I asked myself this question for the first few months I lived in New Orleans, and now I have some real solutions:
Pizza
What I expect from a pizza can be hard to deliver. But deliver is the key word in that phrase, and Cafe Roma does that in all senses of the word. You can order an amazing pizza to be brought by some blessed person who is driving all over town and seeing who-knows-what “outfits” when the doorbell is answered. I had a hamburger, mushroom and onion pizza delivered to the door I sat behind in my pajamas at 2 in the afternoon last weekend. Yes, the crust was still very, very crispy. The ingredients were fresh. The time was fast. Wings, too. Cafe Roma is a salad-pizza-pasta sort of place, and you can place your orders online. You don’t even have to put on pants to make that call.

Delivery Sushi? Only in New Orleans
Delivery pizza is a phenomenon of our parents’ generation. But what about delivery sushi? Mikimoto Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar in Mid-City will leave you hanging- hanging out, that is. Stay on your couch, and Mikimoto will bring you a special crunchy roll and eel sauce. Free delivery happens in Mid-City, Uptown, the CBD, Old Metairie and Lakeview.
That covers pretty much everyone who is couch bound and wants some raw tuna. Mikimoto also has a super active drive-through service. And for the town that knows drive-throughs (namely the daiquiri drive through), Mikimoto isn’t messing around. I dined in the other day and saw 20 cars come through in an hour and half.
Mediterranean Food on the Fly
Get falafel from Mona's Cafe delivered via bike to your perch in the French Quarter. (Photo credit: travelthyme.wordpress.com)
Mona’s Cafe is everywhere, and is the answer to your Mediterranean prayers. Hummus, baba ghanoush, falafel. Yes, yes, yes. I live just a few blocks from Mona’s in the Marigny, and I’m a fan of this delivery. It’s fast and the to-go provides that all important container of left-overs that will get you past dinner and into the late-night. Classic New Orleans, and never disappoints. And shows up on a bike!
So next time you are in your draws and need a snack, make that 4-1-1 to a delivery hub near you. No need to leave your couch, or the comfort of your birthday suit.
