I can’t think of better way to spend your Valentines Weekend than at SweetArts 2011: A CAC Fundraiser. It’s the time of year Contemporary Arts Center celebrates individuals and organizations that embody the heart and soul of the New Orleans cultural arts community. The CAC has always been a phenomenal multi-disciplinary arts center supporting contemporary and emerging art forms. It was only right they took on this job.

Celebrating the Arts

The 2011 honorees are John Barnes, Ben Jaffe, the New Orleans Arts District, the New Orleans Fringe Theater Festival, Aimee Farnet Siegel, and Derrick Tabb. I’m excited to see one of the most phenomenal tuba players one can experience: Ben Jaffe, who is also the Director of Preservation Hall Jazz Band. It’s great to see The New Orleans Art District honored, which consists of a thriving neighborhood anchored by Julia Street with museums, shops, art galleries and more. The area has created such phenomenal events as Jammin on Julia, Art Walk, and White Linen Night. These honorees add extra flavor to the New Orleans cultural gumbo pot.

Great New Orleans Food

If the celebration of all the great talent in New Orleans isn’t enough for you, some wonderful local restaurants will showcase their best dishes for you to try. Of the list, some of my favorites are Galatoire’s, Commander’s Palace, Emeril’s, and Pascal’s Manale. If that doesn’t make your heart want to do a food dance many other options will surely do the trick. If Commander’s palace brings in bread pudding soufflé and Galatoire’s serves up its chicken bonne-femme, I may dance all night.

Sweet Art for your Sweetheart

For Sweet Arts, only CAC will have interactive and illuminated art installations by Marcus Brown, Mark Kirk, Ashley Longshore, and Trixie Minx. If you never experienced the burlesque queen Trixie Minx, you don’t want to miss it! We may even get to experience her comic inspired strip tease, which she was recently awarded an HEEB Top 100 for outstanding comedy.  The party will continue with a little dancing with tunes provided by Mod Dance Party DJ’s: DJ Kristen & DJ Matty with guest DJ Pasta and the Mod Squad Dancers.

SweetArts 2011 is the way to spend the close of your Saturday night! Music, Food, Drinks and Art are all things that make New Orleans the best!
