On the corner of Webster and Magazine Streets is possibly the ultimate Uptown college-age bar in all of New Orleans. It’s a little bit posh and a little bit elegant, but mostly it’s a comfortable spot for twenty-somethings who want a semi-upscale place to hang out.
From the overstuffed couches and thickly-padded bar stools to the pool table, shuffleboard deck and poker machines, the Monkey Hill Bar is a place to “chill out”…and drink a martini or three, of course.
After all, that’s their “ace-in-the-hole” as it were, their singularly original martinis. Technically speaking, a martini is made with gin, dry vermouth and perhaps an olive or twist of lemon, but the Monkey Hill Bar takes it to a whole new, and generously libidinous level. Laced with chocolate syrup or powdered sugar, all of their creations remind one of being in a candy shop for adults. The famous American poet Ogden Nash said “candy is dandy, but liquor is quicker,” but how about both?
New Orleans Style Martinis
For a taste of New Orleans at this bar named after the city’s highest point – Monkey Hill in Audubon Park – start with their liquid version of Bananas Foster. This amazing martini features a generous mix of Stoli Vanil vodka, banana liqueur, white Godiva liqueur, butterscotch schnapps, a light dusting of cinnamon and a healthy, decorative squirt of Hershey’s chocolate syrup.
How about something fruitier? Satisfy your wildest berry desires with their Strawberry Vanilla Martini. Stoli Vanil vodka, white Godiva liqueur and strawberry liqueur are garnished with powdered sugar, strawberry syrup and fresh strawberry slices.
Quick Pick Me Up
If you’re coming down from the sugar high and need a little pick-me-up, try the Double Espresso Martini with Van Gogh Espresso vodka, Starbucks Espresso liqueur, dark crème de cacao and milk with a few espresso beans thrown in for good measure.
