Dominique’s on Magazine: A New Restaurant with Old New Orleans Charm

Not all great New Orleans' restaurants are in the French Quarter

Dominique's old New Orleans charm

In New Orleans, the old and new can live together in astonishing cooperation. Unlike many cities, where much of the city’s history has been reduced to rubble to make way for the next new shiny rendition of “progress,” New Orleans intertwines its past and its future. Modern downtown office buildings hide behind centuries-old facades that were lovingly cared for during the renovation. Historic homes in the French Quarter and elsewhere across the city have been retro-fitted with all the conveniences which couldn’t have been conceived of when they were built two centuries earlier. A new restaurant, Dominique’s on Magazine, matches this city’s love for the blending of new and old.

Chef Dominique Macquet, previously of Dominique’s in the Maison Dupuy, has situated Dominique’s on Magazine in a 100-year-old shotgun double on Magazine Street. While much of the original look and character of the outside has been kept, the inside is clean and modern. Renovating and modernizing a traditional New Orleans shotgun can be an enormous challenge, but Dominique’s has managed to pull everything together nicely. Nothing too over-the-top, but not too understated, either.

A new twist on New Orleans' food

You would think that there is really nothing new about a full bar or fancy wine list, but Dominique’s has still managed to fully-incorporate some of the newest trends: sophisticated designer cocktails, and making wine accessible.

Dominique’s bartenders sling drinks made with liquors you’ve never heard of (Bols Genever) and mixers you’ve never thought of (rose water, anyone?), coming together to create drinks to die for. The one downside is, without a specialty drink menu, you are at the mercy of the bartender to mix up your needs. But don’t worry, you’re in good hands. And instead of simply listing wine after wine, Dominique’s groups the wines together to let you easily pick something on the lighter side or a bit more full-flavored. Still can’t decide? The sommelier on staff will match your food and your palate with the right wine, or your money back (actually, they find you another bottle of wine).

Now down to the main event: Dominique’s food. Both the appetizers and the entrees mix exotic flavors from around the globe with a plethora of local ingredients, like South Louisiana sugar cane, honey from the neighborhood beekeeper or something seasonal from the restaurant’s backyard garden. The appetizers aren’t just teasers for the outstanding entrees, but full-flavored dishes in their own right. Order up a handful of appetizers for a dinner of small plates or go the more traditional appetizer-entree route, either way is sure to leave you satisfied. Just make sure to leave room for dessert, or at least the complimentary gourmet cotton candy!
