When most people think of New Orleans’ music, they think of jazz. And, although the jazz music in New Orleans is always fantastic, this city also has deep roots in the origins of funk.

George Porter, Jr. is one of the most important figures in New Orleans music and in the funk movement. Born in 1947, his mind-blowing skills as a bassist have influenced generations of musicians. He was a co-founder of one of the most important bands in funk, The Meters, who came together in the late 1960s and still play today as The Funky Meters. His other current projects include George Porter Jr.’s Runnin’ Pardners, PBS, and 7 Walkers, and he continues to tour around the United States. For more information about George’s incredible career, check out the official George Porter website.
