One of the highest hopes that New Orleanians had after “the storm” was that things could get better: not just better than they were in the immediate aftermath, but better than things had ever been.

This was partially just a state of mind. Although in my opinion things are now better than they were even before the hurricane, I often find myself unable to explain to outsiders why or how this is the case. So I often turn to physical examples as proof.

Café Prytania is the perfect representation of how things have gotten better in New Orleans. Located at 3445 Prytania Street, literally in front of Touro Infirmary, Café Prytania is a relatively new bar that has been around only a couple of years. It replaced a slew of restaurants and bars in that location that never quite made it.

Café Prytania certainly appears to be upholding the citywide desire to make things better by celebrating everything that is great about New Orleans. As a live venue, its varied weekend calendar includes nostalgic jazz acts, well-known brass bands (Soul Rebels and Rebirth Brass Band have both taken the stage), and up-and-coming local indie bands (Mynameisjohnmichael and The Local Skank, to name a couple).

During Mardi Gras, Café Prytania is a great place to frequent because of its close proximity to the St. Charles parade route. Furthermore, during the Voodoo, Jazz, and French Quarter Festivals, they augment their calendar with post-festival live music. And in addition to being a full-service bar and live venue, up by the stage Café Prytania serves one-of-a-kind food from the Milk Bar. The place even serves snowballs from its sidewalk window.

So next time you’re in New Orleans, a place that reveres its history, take a little time to also celebrate the new.

Those sandwiches on the homemade bread from the Milk Bar are simply amazing. Glad to know they’re providing the food.
