Hannah Chalew is a member of New Orleans' thriving artist scene

Hannah Chalew is one of the founders of T-Lot Artist Collective. Her work examines the post-Katrina landscape emptied of human life. Thanks to hannahchalew.com for the photo.

When I walk around my neighborhood at night, I must admit, I’m embarrassed by how much I like to have tiny glimpses into my neighbors’ homes. When the lights are on and the doors are open, I can’t help turning my head for a split second to see how other people live. I love seeing floor to ceiling bookshelves or neon-colored walls. I love knowing that people are living behind these purple shutters, that they wash dishes or play with their dogs. It’s just nice to know, in a sea of wood walls and shingled roofs, that there are humans inside. I’m not from New Orleans (although I wish wish wish wish I were), so I take any chance I get to see behind closed doors, to see New Orleans from the inside out. It satisfies the writerly itch of being in someone’s home and understanding what makes each character tick.

This does not, DOES NOT, make me creepy or night-crawly or peeping Tommy. I’m legit. I swear.

However, to be even more legit, you should join me on the self-guided tour of artists’ creative spaces at N.O.L.A. (New Orleans Local Artists) Open Studios in the Marigny, Bywater and St. Claude neighborhoods of New Orleans. I mean, if you are into art and into going into other people’s houses, join me. Known for being home to artists and performers, these neighborhoods thrive because of the presence of such collective creativity. This is your chance to go under their umbrella, to see how and where our local artists create, to be with them in their typically private studio spaces.

Michalopoulos is a very highly regardedNew Orleans' artist

James Michalopoulos' studio will be open at the N.O.L.A. Open Studios event. Thanks to www.michalopoulos.com for the image.

Here are the details for this semi-annual event: the studios will be open Saturday and Sunday, November 13th and 14th from noon until 6 p.m. Like most good events in New Orleans, YES, there is a pre-event party and opening. It’s from 7-11 pm on Friday, November 12th, at T-Lot, a new studio and project space in New Orleans. The opening event is called Catapult, a collection of artwork exploring the release of potential energy through varied media. Catapult features several artists, installations and video.

Show up at T-Lot Friday night to get the most updated map, or check here for a list of artists.

See you on the block!

See Hannah Chalew’s work at T-Lot located at 1940 St. Claude (at Touro). Catapult will be open through the month of November.
