If you want a real taste of New Orleans, look no further than Irvin Mayfield’s Jazz Playhouse. Inspired by Irvin Mayfield, a world-renowned jazz trumpeter and artistic director of The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, this jazz club is one of the best in New Orleans. It showcases some of the best talent you’ll ever hear, hosting such jazz names as Jason Marsalis, Shamarr Allen, and Leon “Kid Chocolate” Brown. The atmosphere is relaxed, the music is good, and there is no cover charge. There is also something to do on every day way of the week.
Recently I stopped by on a Thursday night for Playhour at the Playhouse, which is a social event that highlights businesses and gives people the opportunity to network over jazz. There are five different kinds of specialty drinks for $5 each, with appetizers served at the bar. There is also contemporary burlesque featuring Trixie Minx on Friday nights and brass bands every Saturday night.
With a low-key vibe and laid-back atmosphere, the Playhouse is great for nights out with friends, couples, or groups. If you do have a group function, let them know and they’ll even reserve a cozy VIP section for you–just send an email to the Director of Beverage Operations at [email protected] It’s also located in the Royal Sonesta Hotel in the heart of the French Quarter, so you can always step outside and see the sights and sounds of Bourbon Street.
