Palace Cafe in New Orleans offers great sidewalk seating

Palace Cafe's sidewalk seating

Located on Canal Street in the historic and beautiful Werlein building, home of the old Werlein’s music store, Palace Cafe sits right on the line between the old-line French Quarter and the more recent business district. This situs between the old and the new is a reflection of the city itself: reaching for the future while honoring and remembering its storied traditions. Palace Cafe’s food walks the same tightrope, relying heavily on New Orleans classics but injecting a bit of modern flair along the way, giving rise to a cuisine Palace Cafe describes as “Flavor of New Orleans” cuisine.

Shrimp Tchefuncte

All of Palace Cafe’s menus (brunch, lunch and dinner) are built on a foundation of New Orleans classics, including turtle soup, seafood gumbo, the pecan crusted Gulf fish, and New Orleans BBQ shrimp. From this foundation comes those dishes that are infused with modern touches. The shrimp Tchefuncte, Gulf seafood fra diavlo and, my personal favorite, the cochon de lait pot pie. The cochon de lait pot pie is pieces of slow roasted pork, “garlicky” spinach, mashed potatoes and cheddar cheese formed into a “pot pie,” topped with a touch of sweet onion gravy and finished off with some french bread croutons.

Under the direction of Dickie Brennan (also in charge of Dickie Brennan’s Steakhouse and Bourbon House, as well as member of New Orleans’ First Family of restaurateurs), Palace Cafe can be counted on to wow both locals and tourists alike with their consistently excellent food and top notch service. But possibly the best thing Palace Cafe can be counted on is dishing out the deals.

Palace Cafe in New Orleans offers $5 after 5 specials

One of many $5 after 5 plates

Not only does Palace Cafe participate in COOLinary New Orleans, but they also run their own regular promotions such as temperature lunches and $5 after 5. The temperature lunches bring a little fun to the dog days of summer, as Tuesday’s two course lunch special will be priced off Monday’s high temperature. A high of 85 on Monday means the chef’s special two course lunch will run you $8.50, that’s like going through the drive through! The $5 after 5 special provides an array of small plates, cocktails and wine for only $5. Celebrate the end of the work day in the bar or enjoy the sights and the weather from the sidewalk seating, without any worry of breaking the bank. With all these specials, it’s hard to resist checking out the “flavor of New Orleans” cuisine from Palace Cafe.
