This week’s guest post is from Jonathan Ferrara, a New Orleans artist, gallery owner, community activist and arts entrepreneur. Ferrara’s gallery, which is located in the heart of the art’s district on Julia Street in the CBD will be hosting a new David Buckingham exhibit starting this weekend at Art for Art’s Sake.

Art For Art’s Sake is the opening of the art season in New Orleans and it is a visual smorgasbord for the eyes. Every gallery puts up its best shows of the year and ushers in the visual arts season in The Big Easy. Thousands of art lovers, gallery goers and bon vivants take to the streets to make the scene and party in the streets amongst some of the best art in the country. New Orleans has become a destination for art with scores of collectors, curators, media types and artists flying in from all around the country to celebrate the vibrant arts in New Orleans.

Art For Art’s Sake started over two decades ago as a way to kickoff the beginning of the monthly art openings held in the Warehouse District. Julia Street is closed down for blocks upon blocks and bars are set up for libations and culinary delights. Local bands perform on multiple stages and you can find performance artists doing their thing as they walk amongst the throngs of people.

The Warehouse District has become a nationally recognized place where art, food, music and theater converge. Don’ be surprised to find 20,000 people dressed in a wide variety of get-ups and get downs strolling through the galleries and restaurants and bars. For this weekend there are several great shows including Willie Birch and Leslie Dill at Arthur Roger Gallery, Pablo Atchugarry at Gallery Bienvenu, Paul Ninas at Lemieux Gallery, Carolina Sardi at Heriard Cimino and Mark Chatterley at DOCS Gallery and Los Angeles Artist and wildman sculptor David Buckingham at my gallery, Jonathan Ferrara Gallery.

And at the Contemporary Arts Center where the party continues after the galleries on Julia close, DJ Brice Nice will be grooving the sounds and there will be interactive performance and sound installations by Marcus Brown, Manuel and Nathan Weidenhaft, Generic Art Solutions (G.A.S.), Mitchell Gaudet and others while Thomas Woodruff’s Freak Parade exhibition continues.

Art For Arts’ Sake is a visual feast that is not to missed.
