I haven’t lived in New Orleans long enough to tire of casual daytime strolls down St. Charles Avenue. I love the rumble of the street car, and watching the interesting people pass by. The homes are mind-bogglingly big, the gardens lush and green, and the snacks quite tasty. This afternoon, I spent a little time at Pralines by Jean…and Cupcakes too and got a lesson in Saints Football inside humor, as well as some frosting-topped treats to go.
Aside from having lots of Saints themed aprons, decorations, shirts, Mardi Gras masks and trinkets, Jean has a great sense of humor. Her most popular cupcake as of late, the Farve on the Ground, is an apple turn-over cupcake with cinnamon cream cheese frosting. It features turf colored sprinkles and a tiny, sugary Minnesota Vikings Brett Favre in his #4 jersey, laying on his back like a squirmy little baby. Its sister cupcake, Favre Second Quarter Black and Blueberry features the same frosting with almost savory blackberry and blueberry cake. Same little squirmy baby Favre in his jersey. Cute as a button. A black and blue button.
I don’t need to mention this to any New Orleanean, but Brett Favre’s “last but not last” game against the New Orleans Saints during the NFC Championship game last year wasn’t Favre’s best. After a much publicized rally to the chant by American Idol auditioner Larry Platt’s “Pants on the Ground,” Favre spent some actual time on the ground. Enough time to get a cupcake named after him.
Jean also has pralines, as you can tell by the name of her store, packed with pecans grown right here in Louisiana. Jean doesn’t use preservatives and makes her goodies fresh daily, so these babies are aaallllmost good for you. She ships pralines by the box and does quite the business. You can pick them up in-store, or have them shipped to you. Just inside the Lower Garden District, this is the perfect trolley-stopping, afternoon destination to grab some sugary, nutty globs of goodness.
