One thing is for sure about New Orleans, we like our cold beverages. When I first moved to town, I was amazed at the cocktail culture. The Sazarac, Pimm’s Cup, Hurricane, Hand Grenade, Daiquiri, and even the Drive-Through Daiquiri– these are standards in New Orleans culture. Even beer has local strength in numbers: Abita has several great options (and Abita’s Brewery is located just a jump across Lake Pontchartrain), and our very own New Orleans Lager and Ale (NOLA) Brewing Company has taps in many local bars, and a free tour at their headquarters on Tchoupitoulas Street at 2 p.m. on Fridays.
El Gato Negro pineapple cilantro margarita with a slice of orange is the perfect mix of sweet and sour.
But with all of these classic NOLA beverages, how often we can forget the lonely margarita. Let’s give this lovely lady some deserved attention.
If you’re into margarita lunches like I am, try El Gato Negro. El Gato Negro, in the French Quarter, is my top choice, especially with weather like this when I can sit outside and have a killer view of the historic French Market, while consuming fajitas. In spite of, not because of, the delicious pineapple cilantro margarita, the people watching is top notch. The drink menu is full of choices for the tequila connoisseur. One flavor of margarita is called the Blood of the Devil. If that doesn’t hook you, I’m not sure what will.
On a more traditional track, Taqueria Corona has the classic margarita down to a science. I recommend ordering a pitcher on the rocks for the table, they go down so easily. Taqueria Corona also has some primo tacos that go hand in hand with the chilly beverage.
When feeling bomb-barded (yes, pun intended) with too many New Orleans drink choices, keep it simple and go for our lady Margarita.
