New Orleans is not lacking in free, live music. We are spoiled, and sometimes we take that fact for granted. But we don’t know any better. We expect it everywhere we go. This city has its own unique rhythm; a soundtrack that is driven by its music.
And adding his own unique style to the mix is trumpeter and jazz singer, Jeremy Davenport.
Every Thursday (5:30-9p), Friday (9p-1a) and Saturday (9p-1a), Davenport puts on a show at the Davenport Lounge in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, New Orleans.
Intimate and sophisticated, the lounge setup is nearly perfect for such a show. Comfortable sofas, chairs and tables surround the stage, just big enough for the crooner and his band. The fully stocked bar also serves as extra seating and a meeting place for those cool people who would rather keep an eye on the crowd while sipping their Davenportini. And for you dancers, there’s a dance floor to wow the crowd with your rug-cutting skills. Overseeing it all, on the stage, Davenport is prominently displayed and yet so close that it would not be shocking to see him shake hands with the men or make innocently flirtatious comments to the women as they walk by.
The show is reminiscent of the live performances of the 50s and 60s, a time when live performers engaged and interacted with the crowd; people got dressed up to go out; and having a few ballroom dances in your repertoire was considered necessary.
Few people can get away with calling me a tramp, but when Davenport sings, “The Lady is a Tramp,” I swoon, because he is obviously singing directly to me, if only in my mind.
If you are a fan of Sinatra-styled vocals and jazz music, then this is the place for you. Each week, Davenport enthralls his audiences with his suave and stylish confidence and captivates them with his smooth, romantic voice. He performs a selection of old classics and new favorites, all the while making it feel so effortlessly timeless.
