Dr. Greenthumb: a Bright Green Oasis in New Orleans

Nothing makes a hotel room feel more like your own than adding a few personal touches. You can carry a framed photo or two with you in your luggage and place them around the room, or even tote along a scented candle. But a plant, vase of flowers or a bowl of fruit can add oxygen and beauty and can make a space feel like you live there.

Shopping for groceries or plants or flowers makes you feel like a local, and in fact, you are a local for the time you spend in New Orleans!

Venture over to Magazine Street for a true neighborhood feeling, and the best boutique shopping and restaurants you’ll find anywhere.

To help cozy up your hotel room, there’s a truly unique bright green oasis on Magazine Street in the Lower Garden District called Dr. Greenthumb.

Locals love Dr.Greenthumb because the selection of plants is great, and the prices are incredible, starting at $5 and many not more expensive than $20.

Fresh stock is brought in weekly, and the plants are lovingly tended to. On my last visit I saw phalaenopsis orchids and bromeliads in every color. There were petite pony tail palms, and wonderful tall two and three ball topiary. Best of all you cannot kill these hardy plants!

Don’t be afraid to get a plant for your hotel room even if you are visiting just for a few days. When it’s time to go home, you can leave it with a thank you note for the housekeeping staff, or if you stay in a bed and breakfast give it to your host as a gift for the house.

And locals, get on over to Dr. Greenthumb and get some fresh life to plug into those spots where the heat has wilted your plants. The tall topiary are just the thing to place on either side of your front door.
