Have you ever found yourself in the French Quarter muttering “Hand Grenades and Hurricanes are getting kind of old.” Odds are that you’ve gotten all you can out of the “Quarter” experience. Not to worry, though, because (and you may have already suspected this) there is much more to New Orleans than just boozing it up on Bourbon Street.
If you are looking for the definitive way to spend a Saturday night in New Orleans, aside from the places in the French Quarter, head over to Mimi’s in the Marigny. No matter what your plans are for the evening, this bar should be somewhere on your list of stops… be it for a pre-party cocktail or DJ Soul Sister‘s epic, all-night dance party, Hustle!.
Other than Saturdays, Mimi’s is a must because of its motley atmosphere. Whatever your mood or taste, you’ll fit right in. The downstairs, a large brick room with a pool table and one of the best jukeboxes anywhere, ranks high amongst the city’s grungiest and greatest hangouts. The upstairs bar with its dark loung-y vibe often features New Orleans funkiest DJs and most talented up-and-coming jazz musicians. Still, any Mimi’s experience isn’t complete without helping yourself to a few of its legendary tapas. The food, like the booze, is served late, and on weekends, you can be confident that tapas are still being served as late OR early as 4am.
Mimi’s is definitely off the beaten path as far as stereotypical New Orleans bars go. A little further outside of the French Quarter than Frenchmen Street, it’s a place where you’ll find a melange of Marigny and Bywater locals, rock n’ rollers, soul aficionados, artists, and bohemian wanderers. But Mimi’s is far from an “insiders only” type of establishment. The atmosphere is just as intoxicating as the drinks and the music. And, well, there’s noting quite as satisfying as sharing a plate of tapas with a few good friends.
