Noche Latina Fridays

It doesn’t matter if you’re in sneakers or pumps, Friday nights Latino style is another reason to kick up those heels in New Orleans, literally.

There are a few venues around town that’ll offer free Salsa lessons before testing out new or improved skills on the floor, but there’s no need to know a thing about dancing to enjoy these gigs, just an open mind.

Dancing on the streets of New Orleans - allowed and encouraged! The short walk to the next club for more Latino grooves is just as exciting.

Venture south of the border without ever leaving New Orleans with this Friday itinerary for one of the most authentic of local Latin experiences, besides the great Latin food and festivals found year round throughout the Greater New Orleans area.

It all begins at the Balcony Music Club on 1331 Decatur St. where the Latin King of New Orleans, Fredy Omar con su banda, plays the best in salsa, merengue, mambo, cumbia, cha-cha-cha and bachata tunes. Nope, not intended to be a tongue twister.

Order a few drinks at the bar, come solo, with a partner, or with a group and immerse yourself in what I like to call the sweetest of Latin traditions, dancing. And we know a thing or two about that in New Orleans.

After warming up with Fredy Omar, head down the block to Café Lazziza off of Frenchman Street on 2106 Chartres St. where a live DJ mixes energetic Latin beats until the early morning, or until you’re the last couple standing. The club is at its best around 11 or midnight when there’s a bigger crowd.

There’s no cover charge for either venue.

¡Salud!
